Belling the Cat Story
A lot of mice got settled in the store room of a rich man’s house. In order to get rid of this nuisance, the man brought home a fat cat which, on the very first day, caught two mice for her lunch. Thus in a few days the number of mice decreased a lot. There was much fuss and frustration among the mice. So their chief called an urgent meeting to find out some way to deal with the enemy.
At the meeting, all the mice presented their suggestions to deal with the threat to their survival. An old mouse suggested tying a bell round the cat’s neck so that they might know about the movements of the cat and run to a safe place when she was around. This proposal was unanimously accepted by all at the meeting. They were so happy that they started dancing with joy. A senior mouse however, shocked them by asking, “Who will bell the cat?” All the mice sat mum. No one had the courage to say, “Yes, I will do it.”
Meanwhile, the cat pounced upon them as if from nowhere and caught one of them for her meal. The other mice ran into their holes, forgetting all the suggestions to cope with the cat.
Possible Moral:
- Who will bell the cat?
- Some things are easier said than done.
